Initiated in 2008 as a 10 year collaboration of Curtin University and the Department of Sport and Recreation WA, CSRR was founded as an independent advocacy and research centre to generate applied research informing public policy and practice in the field of sport and recreation.

The collaboration operated at the forefront of explorative and applied research in sport and recreation. From climate change to club culture, technology to workplace health and public open space to urban planning the Centre focused on translating research into practical, usable outcomes to guide government and industry decision making and practice. The term of the Centre concluded on 31st December 2018.
