Mind Matters outlines ways in which playing sport and being physically active can improve mental health – promoting the benefits of sport and recreation beyond just physical fitness.

CSRR carried out a review of current research into the area, culminating in a report to the Department of Sport and Recreation which informed the development of this booklet. The research finds that access to sports facilities and opportunities to engage in team sports leads to reduced stress and improved levels of mental wellbeing, with particular benefit for youth, the ageing population, and different cultural groups.

As part of a wider sport advocacy program undertaken by the Department of Sport and Recreation, and supported by CSRR research, the booklet aims to broaden public understanding of the areas in which sport and recreation can benefit society.
