The focus of this article is the new Perry Lakes development, located on the site of the Perry Lakes stadium and former 1962 Empire (Commonwealth) Games buildings. The Games provided global exposure to Perth and the architecture of the competition arenas and adjacent athletes’ village reflected a desire to showcase Perth as vigorous, modern, and international in outlook. The article explores how the density, history and desire for a showcase development turned out in the public realm ‘on the ground’; and it discusses how human movement, place-making, and community memory can be constrained or enhanced through urban design.
