The booming population in Perth’s outer suburbs and the impact it is having on existing facilities reported by the Centre for Sport and Recreation Research centre’s investigation into the shortage of active open spaces, is discussed by Armadale mayor Henry Zelones. The pressing need for more than 20 such Perth suburbs to be accommodated with public sports ovals sees many families having to bear the costs of travelling longer distances to gain access to playing fields, or having to forego sporting activities altogether – many children are already missing out on the health, social and leadership benefits offered by active sport.
