The immediate effects of the imbalance between supply of passive recreation versus active sporting spaces highlighted by a Centre for Sport and Recreation Research report are already being felt by Perth communities. The unprecedented demand for soccer playing spaces, in particular, has brought to the fore the critical impact the shortage is having on hampering the growth of amateur sports. The report’s findings coupled with these current issues, offer impetus to initiatives such as the WA Football Commission working with government and developers to secure playing fields in new growth areas.
