This article reports on Centre for Sport and Recreation Research findings that environmental protection and passive use of green space, amongst other factors, are prioritised over active spaces. This has been the catalyst for the establishment of a Department of Sport and Recreation working group investigating immediate interventions, such as shared use of school ovals. Not addressing the critical shortage of active open spaces is set to have detrimental impacts in the long-term for Perth communities.
