This report describes the development of an online calculator to effectively address the issue of water sustainability for aquatic centres as key centres of community recreation and wellbeing in Western Australia, a result of a collaboration between the Curtin Centre for Sport and Recreation Research, leading aquatics industry support organisation Leisure Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) Aquatics and the Royal Life Saving Society. The report provides a comprehensive screen-by-screen user guide of the Leisure Industries Water Optimisation Calculator (LIWOC), which has been designed to provide a balance between quantitative aspects of water and energy associated with change room water heating, and qualitative guidance for better practice in water conservation in other related areas of the Aquatic Facility (e.g., pool deck, plant room and landscaped areas). The LIWOC tool has been widely promoted and implemented across the state; LIWA Aquatics and key stakeholders are considering how best to make the product available nationally to ensure the industry and the environment can benefit from the work done in Western Australia.
